About me

Everyone’s career is a story of wins and experience. I would not say, "wins and fails" because every unpleasant event or fail teaches us something, and therefore is an experience. So let me tell one of my stories. It all began with open path detectors of hydrocarbon gas installed in our project. As per KZ state law, they must have CP (Calibration Procedure) approved by the state body. The only MR (Measurement Range) of 0-4 LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) was given in CP but actually the detectors had 0-5 LEL with customizable MR up to 0-8 LEL. It is illegal if the measuring instrument does not comply with its CP, and the owner must be fined if no corrective action. And the fine could be huge especially in view of several hundreds of project detectors. On the other hand, it is very costly to change MR of all detectors on-site because of big jobs including scaffolding, safety, and instrumentation teams’ actions. Moreover, it would be necessary to change design documentation relating to detectors and fire & gas protection. In opposite to this, I proposed to change CP and get it re-approved by the state body. This idea caused the skepticism of my friends because it’s not common practice and may be difficult to change documents that already passed state approval. However, I started the job, and after 6 months of a lot of paperwork and correspondence, we got the state body’s approval for MR extension. Thus, the company did not violate the law at the same time avoiding fines and additional costs. I got inspired by this and carried out statistical calculations as per RMG 74-2004 standard for another re-approval to change calibration frequency from 6 months to 12 months. So the company's expenses for detectors calibration were halved. It was very exciting and I’m grateful to my colleagues for these wins, e.g. raw data for the calculations were provided by the contractor team with whom we worked like one family’s children. Keep in touch and share your story. Go here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/murat-ali/, to see some proofs of my skills.
